New grassroots SuperPAC promotes 'votes for sanity' in Weld County
Momentum Colorado monitors local politicians from top to bottom

A new SuperPAC was started in Weld County, Colo., to change “the political character” of one of the state’s reliable Republican strongholds, promising to build a bipartisan network of activists and neighbors who will consistently provide the county with “votes for sanity.”
Momentum Colorado filed to create an IRS 527 organization, colloquially known as a SuperPAC, on Jan. 28. Here’s the initial press release for the new group:
Weld County has long been a strongly Republican county in northern Colorado. Historically, the county has been aligned with the Eastern Plains: a strong western self-reliant spirit and a skepticism of government, atop Greeley’s history as a utopian-temperance experiment. The town of Greeley was dry until 1970 and has an economic population described by an inverted bell curve. Long the character of Reagan Republicanism has led the county.
Today, with rapid growth, Weld County crosses two U.S. Congressional Districts. The 4th CD, represented by Rep. Lauren Boebert, is generally considered one of the safest GOP districts in the nation. The 8th CD has elected a Democrat (Yadira Caraveo) and a Republican (Gabe Evans) in its three-year history, with both elections being among the closest in the country.
Momentum Colorado believes Weld County and Greeley, the home of the majority of the county’s voters, are changing with migration — and with a distaste for President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement. While the character of Weld remains aligned with the GOP, it is aligned with forward-thinking ideals as well as limited government. The ideals that brought Greeley the best water rights in the state, created the North Range Behavioral Health system, and a county-run scholarship program find more affinity with the Democratic members of that county than with the angry, hate-filled, MAGA voters who want to burn everything down for fear of “socialism.”
What We Do
Momentum Colorado will build a solid, engaged network of voters, encouraging them to vote for sanity, emphasizing values of western self-reliance, American exceptionalism, and opportunity for all. This means support for education — for both students who need the most support and our community’s most gifted children — and local businesses, once the backbone of the West but recently destroyed by monopolistic practices and asymmetric price warfare. We will support opportunity for all, from education to economic policies that extend opportunity to small and local businesses over huge conglomerates. Our values will be centered on the idea that we love our neighbors and believe their success increases our own, and that their struggle can be mitigated with our kindness and support.
In order to move the county in this direction, we engage in several efforts. First, we will use a data-driven approach to identify voters of goodwill with whom we will build a network of communication and camaraderie. Second, we will work to keep the elected representatives in Weld accountable to their constituents by tracking their activities and their votes, ensuring the people of Weld know how well they are being served. Finally, we will build support for our friends and allies — voters of divergent political views but of kind and sincere will — and their businesses.
In the next year, we will first work on these efforts in the context of Greeley municipal elections, with the goal of supporting quality candidates for Greeley City Council and the Greeley-Evans District 6 School Board. The effort will extend to Colorado House District 50, a district evenly divided electorally but which should be reliably Democratic. Strong performance in HD50 will translate to stronger performance in Congressional District 8. Alongside the effort in HD50, we will work to fertilize the ground for better candidates in House District 64, the western side of Greeley; House District 65 in Windsor; and a significant contributor to defeating Rep. Lauren Boebert either in the GOP primary or in a well-contested general election.
You can help us.
As a 527 political nonprofit, we are driven by donations, both large and small. We prefer small, local donations, but this effort will take money and support from a wide range of local and non-local friends. We are able to accept donations of any size, and we are required to report these donations.
On its website, the organization lists eight issues that it considers fundamental to good governance:
Democracy
“Good representation empowers voters by giving voters a voice and holding leaders accountable. It ensures that the will of the people drives policies and decisions, protecting individual rights and promoting a more just and representative society.”
Opportunity
“Opportunity opens doors for growth, success, and the chance to create a better future. It allows individuals to pursue their ambitions, overcome challenges, and turn their potential into achievement.”
Facts/Evidence
“Facts and evidence help voters make informed decisions by cutting through misinformation and political bias. A democracy thrives when citizens rely on truth and objective data to choose leaders and policies that best serve their communities.”
The Middle Class
“The middle class is the backbone of a democracy, driving economic stability and social progress through its labor, innovation, and consumer power. A strong and thriving middle class helps ensure a balanced society, fostering political engagement and holding leaders accountable to the needs of everyday citizens.”
Responsibility
“Responsibility is crucial for an elected official, as their decisions impact the lives of the people they serve. Leaders who act with integrity and accountability strengthen public trust and ensure that democracy works for everyone.”
Respect
“Respect in the political process fosters healthy debate, cooperation, and a government that truly represents the people. When leaders and citizens engage with civility, it strengthens democracy by promoting understanding and meaningful progress.”
Pax Americana
“Our representatives must provide voters with global stability, economic growth and national security by maintaining strong international leadership. A stable world order under U.S. influence helps protect democratic values and ensures a safer, more prosperous future for American citizens.”
Responsiveness
“Representatives should actively listen to their constituents, ensuring that government policies reflect the needs and concerns of the people they serve. When leaders are responsive and engaged, democracy thrives, and trust in the political system is strengthened.”
The Gadfly is not officially affiliated with this group, but he is incredibly excited to hear of this effort. He has reached out to the organization’s leadership and is working to determine a method to collaborate with them to further both of our efforts, all for the good of Greeley, Evans and Weld County.
The Gadfly may eventually run the group’s weekly legislative roundup here, but in the meantime you can sign up to receive Momentum Colorado’s newsletter at votesforsanity.com.
